I don't know if you guys saw or heard about this on the news, but this is really good. This guys name is Randy Pausch. He is a proffesor at Carnegie Mellon and is dieing of Pancreotic Cancer. His speech, which i haven't got to finish all of yet, is mainly on how to live life and what needs to be focused on while living. Although it may sound somewhat far off, i think it applies to economics. Economics is all about choices and the individual importance of a choice and what you are giving up for that choice. Also, you need to take into account how other people way in on the decision you are making if they are involved in it. His speech is about the same things, expect on a much deeper level, not just about material objects; about life, time, friendship, family and compassion.
I will try to get more information and update this with the whole story but you guys should definately take a look at this, even if you aren't in Mrs. McDaniel's AP Econ class.
Type in "Randy Pausch Last Lecture" on youtube.

i don't know about you, but the more i learn about econ, the more i've found myself asking questions relevent to economics in my head as i make decisions in my life. it's true that money is not the only factor in decisions. i find myself analyzing my utility versus others' in choices i make, which is a good thing because i become less selfish as i consider other people. i also think about opportunity costs and comparative advantage-yes, i am a nerd. my point is that learning a little econ is probably a good thing for everyone.
kind of going off of abby's words, I also find myself thinking about econ outside of class, hence my fireside blog. But yes it definately helps people get a general understanding of what is going on in the world around them and how things in the business world and as consumers works.
okay abby's comment cracks me up because the other day we were in the music wing and there was a bucket of corn and she turned to me and said "look, maggie, a perfect competition product"
hahah oh man
but josh i think it's neat you're relating things to econ. i'll have to check out this guys lecture!
Yay! Thinking like an economist!
(Be careful...it will change your life!)
